Background: Prior to becoming a pastor in 1987, I had a 15-year career in publications, serving as an editor and publisher of suburban weekly newspapers, general manager of a daily newspaper and publishing company, and later a consultant in publications and print media management.

All these skills combined to serve me well as a parish pastor and redeveloper, serving parishes in Indiana, Kentucky, and Florida. As a pastor-redeveloper, I have a keen understanding of the central role of mission in the life of a church and have worked with numerous pastors and parishes to assist them with their mission.  From 2002 to 2006, I served the Bishop's staff of the Florida-Bahamas Synod ELCA as Director of Communications.  Since 2006, I have worked in the Indiana-Kentucky Synod, ELCA to assist interim pastors and parishes and to organize and develop a new fund for clergy training and support.  In 2008, I was called to the Bishop's staff of the Indiana-Kentucky Synod, ELCA as director of that fund.

My worship and music interest span nearly 40 years of study, writing, lecturing, teaching, leading workshops, and assisting committees, pastors, parishes, and synods in the states above, plus Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, and ELCA Regions 6 and 9. I am a professional musician and a published composer (Augsburg Fortress and GIA) and have served as Worship Consultant to the Florida-Bahamas Synod and the Indiana-Kentucky Synod, ELCA.

This website receives more than 2,000 visits per month and is presently a linked resource for numerous synods and denominations, as well as other liturgy and sermon preparation websites.

What people are saying about me:

"Liturgist, musician, poet, vagabond, priest--Pastor Thomas Weitzel combines his many gifts to nurture God's people in the art of worship. He is thorough, prompt, perceptive, and engaging, whether creating liturgies or working with groups. Tom's high energy and deep spirituality made him a valuable colleague with the Office of the Bishop." --William B. Trexler, former bishop, Florida-Bahamas Synod

"When you put together a depth of feeling, a love of the cross, musical talent, and a way with words, what you come up with is liturgy, teaching, and preaching by Thomas Weitzel. I am happy to have benefited from his talents, and recommend him highly." --Robert Smith, former Senior Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Valparaiso, IN, now retired

"Thomas Weitzel was retained by St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Clearwater, FL during my assignment as interim Sr. Pastor. We were up to our shoulders in a worship war between contemporary and traditional devotees. Not only did I discover that Tom is a creative musician, but I came to treasure him for his keen insights into people, corporate controversy and mission. I'm so glad to have had the opportunity to work together with him. I highly recommend him to you." --Pastor Chris Hellevik, Bloomington, MN

"As a teacher, Pastor Thomas Weitzel has a knowledge of the Bible and biblical history that bring his classes alive and make them relevant.  He brings humor and fun into his presentation style."  --LaDelle Daly, Council President, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Clearwater, FL
